have you ever wondered what causes acidity? well, it's actually pretty simple. acidity occurs when your stomach secretes an excess amount of hydrochloric acid. hcl (hydrochloric acid ) is a gastric juice used for digestion.

so, what triggers acidity? there are a few things that can set it off as certain foods like tomatoes, chocolate, spicy or fatty foods can do it. also, consuming caffeine, alcohol, or carbonated drinks can lead to acidity. being overweight or obese, smoking or vaping, and stress and anxiety can also contribute to it. even some medications or underlying medical conditions like hiatus hernia or diabetes can cause acidity.

now, let's talk about the symptoms. you might experience heartburn, which is that burning sensation in your chest and throat. or maybe you'll have regurgitation, where food or acid flows back into your mouth. indigestion is another common symptom, which can feel like bloating, discomfort, or pain in your upper abdomen. some people even have trouble swallowing or experience chest pain or tightness.

but here's the thing: acidity isn't just about food or lifestyle choices. it's also related to how our bodies work. normally, a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (les) separates the esophagus and stomach, keeping acid from flowing back up. but if the les relaxes or weakens, acid can flow back into the esophagus and cause acidity.

so, what can you do to manage acidity? well, making some lifestyle changes can really help. eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding trigger foods and drinks, losing weight, quitting smoking, and managing stress can all make a big difference. you can try elevating the head of your bed, taking antacids or acid reducers if it becomes unbearable.

but if you're experiencing severe symptoms, don't hesitate to seek medical attention. if you have severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing, get help right away.
