the gut acts as a second brain in the human body. the link between the two is very important to be understood for good physical and mental health. it is important to identify signs of gut imbalance early to prevent long term health concerns.
symptoms of poor gut health
long term fatigue
digestive problems like bloating, regurgitation, heartburn, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, food intolerance, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and many more
inflammation and aching joints
acne, skin rashes, and psoriasis
ADHD or issues with concentration
anxiety or depression
what can cause gut imbalance?
there are several factors that contribute to gut imbalance in the body. understanding these factors can help you adapt to a healthier and balanced lifestyle. the fast paced urban lifestyle consisting of high stress levels, lack of sleep, a western diet high in processed and sugary foods, and dependency on antibiotics can impact the gut microbiome affecting immune function, hormone levels, weight, and disease development.
now that the factors have been identified, let’s figure out how to restore the balance.
improving gut health through lifestyle and diet changes
lowering stress levels: ways to lower stress include meditation, walking, socializing, creating a positive space, limiting alcohol intake, practicing yoga, etc.
getting good sleep: prioritizing at least 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night can significantly improve gut health.
eating slowly: eating mindfully and slowly can reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes, promoting a healthy gut.
staying hydrated: drinking water at regular intervals can increase the diversity of bacteria in the gut and prevent constipation.
checking for food intolerants: identifying common trigger foods like dairy and gluten can help you figure out what is or isn’t working in your diet and adapt accordingly.
changing diet: reducing processed, sugary, and high-fat foods from your diet can lead to better gut health. a diet high in fiber and polyphenols can also positively impact gut health.
